Nancy O'Dell started her career in broadcasting as an anchor at WPDE-TV, Myrtle Beach South Carolina. In the following years, she worked as a anchor of the morning news and as a crime reporter at WCBD-TV. O'Dell's reports in Charleston regarding the police's tolerance in DUI cases prompted a State Law Enforcement Division to investigate.
